Capital Punishment, Save the DGH & A27 Campaign - all on 5Live Breakfast today

I had the pleasure of being asked to take part in an interview for BBC Radio 5 Live this morning with Cllr Annabelle West and Ian Lucas on what we wanted to hear in Prime Minister, David Cameron's speech at the party conference later today.

The BBC's Matt Cole remarked during preparation for the interview that unusually he was getting record strength from a satellite over India - probably hardly surprising given the amount of scaffolding and Heras fencing that our town is covered in due to the mismanagement of taxpayers property portfolio in Eastbourne!

Sadly we only had time for one point each, Ian did a great job of highlighting our local campaign to Save the DGHa and preserve essential local services for patients without the need to travel miles to other hospitals.

Annabelle raised people's concerns over law and order and I am pleased to say, had the courage to raise the issue of the restoration of capital punishment. The number of people calling for the return of this in cases like the recent murder of little April Jones in Wales and the cruel murder of the two female police officers just weeks ago is growing and many believe that the fear of heavy punishment in extreme cases like these would prove a deterrent and lead to a reduction in crime.

I chose to call for action on vital improvements to the A27 between Lewes and Polegate. This was previously agreed by John Major's last Conservative government and then cancelled by John Prescott when Tony Blair came to power in 1997. Local Lib Dems have failed our area in not campaigning effectively and Transport Minister & Lewes MP, Norman Baker even took delight recently in opening a £1m cycle way from Firle to Beddingham which frustrated motorists regularly sit in traffic jams looking at.

So much more could have been said if we had been allocated more time but we look forward to the speech later today and remain committed to campaigning on the issues that matter to you.
