A decision to select Newhaven Port for the operations and maintenance of a proposed offshore wind farm has been hailed by East Sussex County Council Leader Peter Jones and Lewes District Council Leader James Page as ‘a massive boost for Newhaven and the local economy'.
Peter Jones and James Page have warmly welcomed the announcement by E.ON that Newhaven Port would be used to support the Rampion Offshore Wind farm, subject to E.ON being granted a Development Consent Order.
Councillor James Page said: “This is fantastic news for Newhaven and a tribute to the excellent work and vision of Newhaven Port and Properties. It's also a testament to working in partnership.
“Lewes District Council has supported Newhaven Port and Properties at every stage and we are committed to making this happen. This will provide a boost for the District Council's aspiration to have a UniversityTechnological College supporting an engineering and renewable hub in Newhaven.”
Councillor Peter Jones said: “One of the key aims of our £500m budget for growth is to support business expansion across the county – so this announcement is a fantastic boost for our economic regeneration plans.
“We've campaigned for over two years at both regional and national level for this outcome on the wind farm issue so we're absolutely delighted. This decision will ensure much needed and significant investment in Newhaven Port and most importantly will bring new jobs to the town. Another UK port could have been chosen for the contract but Newhaven has won the day”.
