Multi-million pound school improvement boost for East Sussex


Schools and colleges across East Sussex are benefiting from over £20m worth of improvement work being carried out by the County Council.

Projects include new buildings and extensions, major building repair work, roof upgrades and repairs, landscaping, access improvements, temporary accommodation, heating maintenance and general repairs.

The County Council has been working on about 100 separate schemes at primary, secondary schools and colleges and special schools. Many of the projects were completed over the summer in time for the start of the new term in early September.

Councillor Keith Glazier, Deputy Leader of the County Council, said: “We're investing millions of pounds to improve and repair our school buildings. We know we've still got a lot of work to do in this area. However, parents, carers and school staff can be confident that even in these tough times for council budgets, we are working hard to carry out the improvements and repairs on our priority lists.

“These contracts also help to boost local business, supporting our overall aims to regenerate the East Sussex economy,” added Councillor Glazier.

Examples of school improvement work carried out include:

Five school improvement projects including the relocation of Greys Nursery to Southdown Junior School in Newhaven, and the completion of extensions to The Haven CofE Primary School and Heron Park Junior Academy, and the conversion of Hampden Park Infants to form College Central West – all Eastbourne- £8m
Design work for five primary school extensions that have a combined value of £7m which will result in the replacement of temporary accommodation
Over 70 school maintenance projects at schools and colleges across the county - £3.5m
Eight temporary accommodation projects with a combined value of over £1m
Six projects to provide schools with improved disabled access with a combined value of £600,000

Herne Junior, Crowborough – window replacement £175,000
South Malling CE Primary, Lewes – replacement of roofs and boilers £119,000
South/Coastal area of the county

Marshlands Primary, Hailsham – replacement roof £46,000
Parkland Infant, Eastbourne – replacement roof £71,400
Polegate School – boiler replacement £84,000
East of the county

Little Ridge, St Leonards – boiler replacement £90,000
New Horizons, St Leonards – bank stabilisation £60,000
Helenswood School, Hastings – pipework replacement £125,000
