Happy New Year!
In advance of David Cameron's speech on Friday, there has been a great deal of talk about how Norway and Switzerland manage their relations with the EU. There are important differences between the Swiss and Norwegian models, and it's worth reminding ourselves of what they are:
Nick Clegg has butted in to say that "a referendum, when you're in the middle of an emergency repair job to the economy, would be putting the cart before the horse". The Deputy PM's addiction to cliché and mixed metaphors, as he might put it himself, "knows no bounds":
