Chris Smith is a Director of well known local printing firm, Smith & Ouzman and was part of the previous delegation that met with Ministers in Westminster to campaign for improvements to the A27 between Polegate and Lewes. Chris strongly supports the latest campaign to upgrade the A27 and is actively encouraging residents and businesses to sign the e-petition and help us demonstrate how much local people want urgent action to improve road safety, reduce congestion and pollution and help encourage growth in our local economy.

"Our company Smith & Ouzman Ltd has put up with the bad connections with the rest of the world for over sixty years. We encouraged our staff of Londoners to move to Eastbourne in 1955, before there were any motorways and have remained faithful to Eastbourne ever since, although there have been temptations to move to places like Crawley. We export a large proportion of our security stationery via Heathrow, and the paper we use mainly comes through ports such as Felixstowe.
A better road from Polegate to Lewes is essential to our continued presence at Hampden Park. Today people of Southerham are complaining about the noise on the new three lane road over the railway. If the road is finished to make it four lane the traffic would move smoothly, and make less noise. It is the braking and accelerating that causes noise. There is space over the railway bridge for a fourth lane if a light weight bridge is built adjacent to the road for cyclists.
Now that the DGH is losing some of its services to the Conquest at Hastings, it is important that the Eastbourne to Hastings road is also improved so that emergency services and also urgent cars can carry patients to the Conquest quickly and smoothly without constant stops and starts. This would hopefully join the new link road from Bexhill to Hastings.
Of course the road from Hastings to Brenzett which still runs along the route for horses and horse drawn carts is atrocious, and is an example of people wishing to live in the eighteenth century. Some of us still remember the proposal of the Honiton to Folkestone Trunk Road.
On a personal basis when some of the Polegate to Beddingham road is closed owing to the frequent accidents, the traffic finds its way onto the by-roads, and causes chaos in villages such as Ripe, and damages the verges. Also traffic from Hailsham to Lewes takes short cuts through these by-roads. A dual carriageway on the A27 would encourage vehicles to keep to the A roads.
